One of the great things about coffee, despite of course the taste and caffeine boost all of us rely on, is that it transcends genres. You can find coffee lovers in every age group, in every country, all around the world. In fact, 2 billion cups of coffee are consumed daily by about 12% of the world's population!
Now with the rapid rise of specialty coffee, there is another point of common interest that brings coffee lovers together, as people around the world share their brew recipes, their favourite coffee tools, and of course their favourite coffee! (This is what The Brew Journal is for, after all).
Given that brewing great coffee can be so addictive, it’s really no surprise that celebrities also dive down the rabbit hole and get interested in coffee. Jerry Seinfeld famously does the show “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee,” which is one of the more well-known examples. While some celebrity collaborations can seem more like a marketing stunt than a genuine love for coffee (cough cough Biebs Brew 😅), there are some celebrities who, according to our trusted sources, have a genuine passion for great coffee!
Today we’re looking at 3 of these celebrities who have taken their love of coffee to the next level and created their very own coffee brands!
Valtteri Bottas - Kahiwa Coffee Roasters
You might already know that F1 driver Valtteri Bottas is known on the Formula 1 grid for offering everyone delicious coffee during a race weekend. In fact, one of his greatest moments in coffee came when he got teammate Zhou Guanyu into specialty coffee!
Valtteri took his love of coffee a step further in 2020 when he became a co-owner of Kahiwa Coffee Roasters in Lahti, Finland. He has even been known to jump in and judge various coffee competitions around the world like the Finnish Aeropress Championship in 2021.
Hugh Jackman - Laughing Man Coffee
You might know him as Wolverine, but Hugh Jackman is also a notorious coffee lover. After a trip to Ethiopia with his wife in 2009 Hugh was inspired to create his own coffee brand to help support coffee farmers around the world. The brand - Laughing Man Coffee.
While Laughing Man Coffee was acquired in 2015 by Keurig, it doesn’t stop Hugh from loving a cup of coffee when travelling. Being a true Aussie at heart his go-to drink is of course the flat white!
Jimmy Butler - Big Face
From sinking buckets on court to sinking brews at home, Jimmy Butler has turned his passion for coffee into big business. After getting into specialty coffee a few years ago, Jimmy began carrying around coffee equipment (we’re talking kettles, V60s, and all the accessories) on his travels and to practice sessions for the Miami Heat. It’s even rumoured he would charge teammates $20 per cup during the NBA training camp in 2020 for his freshly brewed coffee.
A year later in 2021 Jimmy started Big Face, a coffee and lifestyle brand. The brand collaborates with well-known specialty coffee brands like Onyx, where the coffee is roasted, and a recent collaboration with Fellow. It’s even rumoured that after his NBA career his goal is to compete in the Barista Championships! 👀
Specialty Coffee is gaining momentum all over the world, and with big-name celebrities being so vocal about their passion for coffee it brings even more eyes to this fantastic industry. So the next time you’re watching or competing in a coffee competition - keep an eye out you, might be surprised at who you meet!
